A Guide to Exploration Sites
There are 6 types of exploration sites in EVE all of which move around the solar systems they are designated to, these 6 types are:
- Unknown - These are more often than not combat sites although all signatures start at being type unknown.
- Gravimetric - Asteroid sites
- Ladar - Gas Cloud sites
- Magnetometric - Archaeology/Salvage sites
- Radar - Hacking Sites
- Wormholes
See below for more details on different exploration sites.
Unknown Sites
| Site Type | Combat Site |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Some gunnery skills and a modicum of PVE experience |
| Equipment needed | Ship fitted to tank as long as possible the damage type the NPC rats do, along with guns/missiles to kill. |
| NPC Rats | They will always be present.. |
| Site Purpose | PVE pew pew |
| Other | Up to and including 0.5 (1.0 to 0.5) you will usually just find frigates with the occasional cruiser, sometimes you may find battleships. In low sec it's usually frigs, cruisers and battleships and the lower you go the bigger/badder and nastier they get. Down to 0.5 you should be able to solo Unknown sites as I managed quite comfortably in a Hawk. If your worried take a couple of friends. Make sure you have plenty of cargo space to loot and get someone to fit a salvager to get the loot. Unknown sites have a chance of escalating, what this means is that once you have completed the site you are on another site somewhere else will spawn. To see if a site escalates check your journal - expeditions tab. Then follow to the site and complete, an escalation site will not stay there forever so be sure to get right on it. Try to complete escalated sites without leaving otherwise it may despawn. An escalated site may spawn another one and another etc etc. |
Gravimetric Sites
| Site Type | Mining Site |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Mining |
| Equipment needed | Mining ship fitted with mining beams, which can vary in ship type, as some grav sites have restricted gate access and will only let in certain types of ship. |
| NPC Rats | They will always be present in the initial encounter, killing all the NPC rats may cause the site to despawn so try and keep one alive. |
| Site Purpose | Your own private mining field (until someone else scans the site down). |
| Other | Most grav sites usually contain small amounts of roids usually found in low sec systems and can be lucrative. The asteroids will not respawn once popped (or if you don't pop them) once you mine what's there it's gone. |
Ladar
| Site Type | Gas Cloud |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Gas Cloud Harvesting L1 (Mining L4) |
| Equipment needed | Gas Cloud Harvester 1 (req Gas Cloud Harvesting L1) or Gas Cloud Harvester II (req Gas Cloud Harvesting L5) |
| NPC Rats | Sometimes none are present, sometimes they are - in WH space you may get no rats and just turrets |
| Site Purpose | Gas Cloud sites may contain gases for the manufacturing of boosters or in WH space the manufacture of materials needed for Tech III Production. |
| Other |
Magnetometric
| Site Type | Archaeology or Salvage site |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Archaeology (Science L5, Survey L5 and Electronics L1) |
| Equipment needed | Analyzer 1 (req Archaeology L1) or Analyzer II (req Archaeology L5) |
| NPC Rats | Sometimes none are present, sometimes they are - in WH space you may get no rats and just turrets |
| Site Purpose | Sites tend to drop Tech 2 Blueprint copies and rig parts. It has also been know that invention skill books are also available here. |
| Other | The way these sites work is that they may have a number of structures/cargo pods which need either scanning with the analyzer module (structures or cans) or salvaging (cans), this allows access to the container. |
Radar
| Site Type | Hacking site |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Hacking (Science 5, Electronics Upgrades L5, Electronics L2, Engineering L2) |
| Equipment needed | Codebreaker I (req Hacking L1) or Codebreaker II (req Hacking L5) |
| NPC Rats | Sometimes none are present, sometimes they are - in WH space you may get no rats and just turrets |
| Site Purpose | Hacking sites drop datacores, decrypters, data interface blueprint copies, basically these are the necessary items for Invention. |
| Other | The way these sites work is that they may have a number of structures/cargo pods which need hacking into using the Codebreaker module, this allows access to the contents within the container. |
Wormholes
| Site Type | N/A |
|---|---|
| Skills needed | Courage, guts, guile, organisation and cunning |
| Equipment needed | Friends |
| NPC Rats | Advanced be very careful |
| Site Purpose | All Wormholes that lead to unknown space are resources for Tech III ship manufacturing |
| Other | See Wormhole section |
